Stephen Shaya, M.D. of J&B Virtual Solutions Speaks at the NFL Hall of Fame Huddle for Health Symposium
On August 2nd, 2024, Stephen Shaya, M.D., Executive Servant Leader at J&B Medical joined the stage at the Inaugural Huddle for Health Symposium in Canton, OH during the NFL Enshrinement weekend. He spoke along with NFL Hall of Famers Ray Lewis, Emmitt Smith, and Warren Sapp. The discussion was curated by former ESPN anchor and sportscaster Sage Steele.
Dr. Shaya discussed the critical youth mental health crisis and the benefits of using /\D/\M validated screening tools for school-wide and population-specific screenings. Currently, this innovative screening and diagnosis tool is being used in 3 different statewide programs with several key pillars:
Identifying and Addressing Mental Health Risks
Over 1 in 3 high school students experience persistent sadness or hopelessness and 1 in 6 youth reported making a suicide plan in the last year. Mental health significantly impacts overall health and well-being, with risk factors increasing the likelihood of substance abuse and risky behaviors.
However, widespread use of validated screening tools for school-wide and population-specific screenings, provides evidence-based brief interventions, resources, and referrals to high-risk youth and their families.
Strengthening Families
One key element to reduce Mental Health Risks in student populations comes from strong parent/caregiver-teen relationships. When families are supported with the tools needed to mitigate risks and harmful experiences, it improves mental and physical health and social functioning.
Dr. Shaya quoted Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. “The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depths.
